Taipei, 16 Jan (EFE).- Voting has officially ended in Taiwan’s presidential election with results due to be released Saturday evening.
Polling stations closed at 4pm local time (8am GMT) for a vote that is expected to see the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) claim victory.
Votes are now being counted across the island’s 386 polling stations, with results due to start coming out after 6pm local time (10am GMT).
DPP candidate
Tsai Ing-wen is predicted to beat the ruling Kuomintang Party (KMT) and become Taiwan’s first female leader.
Crowds gathered on Saturday afternoon in New Tapei to await the results. Many waved banners in support of the DPP and its pro-independence stance.
One banner read: “Taiwan is not part of China!” Another sign declared Tsai to be “Asia’s
Angela Merkel“, the German chancellor whom Tsai has previously compared herself to. EFE
