Devotees parade through streets of Manila

Manila, 16 Jan (EFE).- Filipino Roman Catholic devotees flooded the streets of Manila on Saturday for a procession to honor the child Jesus.

Hundreds of thousands of people took part in the procession in the Philippine capital, raising models of the Santo Niño, or child Jesus, with dancers and musicians also joining the festivities.

Former president and current Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada greeted festival goers, while broadcaster Korina Sanchez-Roxas, the wife of presidential contender Mar Roxas, was seen throwing wrist bands into the crowd.

The Philippines is set to hold presidential and national elections on May 9, with more than 18,000 positions up for grabs.

The country’s Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has warned candidates against “premature campaigning” before the official campaign period, which begins in February.

The annual Sinulog Grand Parade will take over the streets of Cebu City on Sunday as part of the Sinulog festival, which honors the Santo Niño. EFE
