INGOLSTADT, Germany – Police say they have arrested a hostage-taker and freed his captives at the city hall in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt.

The standoff, which began Monday morning, forced Chancellor Angela Merkel to cancel an election rally there.

Police spokesman Guenther Beck told The Associated Press that the captor was injured during a police raid late Monday afternoon, and his two remaining captives were freed.

Beck said it wasn’t immediately how the hostage-taker was injured.

Earlier in the day, the captor freed his other two people he had kidnapped.

The drama began shortly before 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) Monday.
